Who Is a Good Candidate for Sculptra Treatments?

Originally designed to augment the cheeks of people with HIV non-invasively, Sculptra BBL is an FDA-approved, poly-L lactic acid-based dermal filler. While it is still used for its original application, years of research have proven that it can safely and effectively volumize other regions of the face and body. Today, our experts at Beautique Medical Anti-Aging in Knoxville, TN are discussing who qualifies for this treatment, where it can be used and more.

Is Sculptra Right for You?

One of the most incredible benefits of Sculptra BBL is how safe it is. While invasive anti-aging procedures require candidates to be in very good health, this injectable dermal filler is safe enough for people with serious medical conditions, like HIV. That said, not every cosmetic concern can be treated with this dermal filler effectively. For instance, you can effectively and safely augment your cheeks or recontour your chin and jawline with this injectable. Additionally, it is a great way to restore volume and a youthful appearance to hollow temples. Nevertheless, it is not the ideal solution if you want to volumize your upper eyelids or augment your lips. Here’s a closer look at whether you are a good candidate for poly-L lactic acid (PLLA) injections: ‘

You’re Worried About How Your Cheeks Look

There’s a good chance you’ll be considered a good candidate for this treatment if you’re worried about the way your cheeks look. Remember, this PLLA injectable was designed to volumize the cheeks and restore definition to the cheekbones. Notably, this filler may also be appropriate for you if you want to correct loose, sagging skin without an invasive cheek lift. When volume is restored to the cheeks, sagging skin will tighten naturally.

You’re Worried About How Your Temples Look

You may also be considered a good candidate for this treatment if you are worried about the appearance of your temples. Only three to six convenient injection sessions are required to increase the volume of your temples by 40%, helping to shave years off of your face. Additionally, you won’t need to change your lifestyle to continue enjoying these results for many years. That said, we recommend making lifestyle choices that support collagen health.

You’re Worried About How Your Nose Looks

Nasolabial folds are folds that run from your nose to your mouth. These deep vertical folds often make people look years older than they actually are. If you have nasolabial folds, we will assess them during your initial consultation to determine whether they are caused by volume loss or muscle hyperactivity. If they are caused by muscle hyperactivity, a neuromodulator treatment is required for optimal results.

You’re Worried About How Your Jowls Look

Before recent advances in anti-aging correction, an extended, invasive procedure was required to lift sagging jowls. Even worse, six weeks of recovery was required with such restrictions as the inability to lift over nine pounds. If you could live with over a month of restrictions, you would also have to live with taking two weeks off from work. With Sculptra BBL, there is no pain, discomfort or downtime and you don’t have to miss out on your favorite hobbies. This dermal filler is truly one of the most convenient anti-aging solutions available today.

You’re Worried About How Your Mouth Looks

Like nasolabial folds, marionette lines may be caused by volume loss or hyperactive muscles. Marionette lines are vertical lines that start at the outer corners of the mouth. When caused by overactive muscles, they deepen when you smile, laugh or use your mouth to breathe, talk, sing, eat or drink. Again, Sculptra BBL isn’t effective for treating dynamic lines caused by overactive muscles, but it can easily erase stubborn marionette lines caused by significant volume loss. Note, sometimes people have marionette lines caused by volume loss and overactive muscles. This PLLA-based dermal filler can treat volume loss-related marionette lines for five years, but dynamic marionette lines may return after six months of a neuromodulator treatment. Factors that affect the longevity of your results include:
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Tobacco consumption
  • Hydration
  • Nutrition
  • Sun protection
  • Stress levels

A Crucial Note on Stress Levels

While it may not seem intuitive at first glance, the results of your treatment will last longer if you can manage your stress levels. Psychological stress causes your body to create a stress hormone called cortisol. This hormone results in many physical effects, including the degradation of elastin and collagen in the skin. These fibers and proteins keep your skin tight and smooth and Sculptra BBL induces the production of collagen. While you can’t eliminate every stressor from your life, we strongly recommend practicing mindfulness to mitigate the effects of stressors. For example, when you’re stressed about a particularly difficult project at work, name 10 things your job gives you the opportunity to do, like provide a safe home for your family.

You Can Spare a Couple of Hours

This treatment may be right for you if you have a couple of hours to spare. Depending on the scope of the treatment, it can take anywhere from 15 to 60 minutes to complete. If you need to address several large areas, like your cheeks and jawline, your appointment may take 90 minutes or longer. Note, you may need anywhere from one to six injection sessions to perfect your appearance. However, most people can achieve their ideal results after two or three treatment sessions. Depending on the scope of the improvements you are trying to achieve, you may want to advise your supervisor you may need to take a couple of long lunches every four to six weeks for a while.

Signs This Treatment Isn’t Right for You

As noted above, Sculptra BBL is not FDA-approved to volumize the lips or skin around the eyes. Therefore, if you’re concerned about the appearance of upper eyelid wrinkles, bags beneath your eyes, asymmetrical lips or thin lips, another dermal filler will be more appropriate for you. Here are some other signs you shouldn’t consider this dermal filler for your cosmetic concerns.

You’re Pregnant or Breastfeeding

The FDA has not approved this injectable dermal for pregnant women due to a lack of research conducted by independent clinical researchers. Due to the lack of research, we recommend waiting until you deliver your baby before you consider this treatment if you are not breastfeeding. If you are breastfeeding, you should wait until your baby is completely weaned off of your milk before considering this treatment. There is no evidence that PLLA passes through breast milk and affects infants. However, we still advise holding off on treatment until you are neither pregnant nor nursing.

You’re Older Than 65 or Younger Than 18

The FDA has approved this injectable dermal filler for most adults who are at least 18 years of age. You need to wait until you’re at least 18 to consider this treatment. Additionally, this treatment is perfectly safe for adults who are over 65 years of age, but it may not be the most effective solution. If you’re older than 65, we will discuss your options based on your unique aesthetic goals during your initial consultation.

You Have Irritated Skin

You should hold off on treatment if your skin is irritated. Examples of skin irritation that will preclude you from treatment temporarily include:
  • Active infections
  • Sunburn
  • Acne
  • Rashes

What Alternative Cosmetic Solutions May Benefit Me?

Juvederm XC

Juvederm XC is a great way to safely and effectively volumize your skin and erase wrinkles by increasing water retention drastically. Besides treating such cosmetic concerns as nasolabial folds, Juvederm XC can be used to augment the lips painlessly. Specifically, we offer the Nurse Shara Latorre Lip Flip with Key Hole Pout which involves injecting Juvederm XC and botulinum toxin in and around the lips. The result is significantly plumper lips.

Juvederm Volbella XC

Like Juvederm XC, Juvederm Volbella XC can be used to augment the lips. This Juvederm formula is most commonly used to perform the Nurse Shara Latorre Lip Flip with MiniPout. Like the Lip Flip, it combines the benefits of botulinum toxin and a hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler. The primary difference is the results are much more subtle, making it perfect for people with asymmetrical lips who are fairly satisfied with the size and shape of the lips. Juvederm Volbella XC can also be used to erase smoker’s lines.

Frequently Asked Questions About Lip Flips Answered

Will My Treatment Hurt?

No, neither the Nurse Shara Latorre Lip Flip With Key Hole Pout nor the Nurse Shara Latorre Lip Flip with MiniPout is painful. Although your lip skin is very thin, you will feel nothing more than a slight pressure when the botulinum toxin is administered. Once the Juvederm is administered, you will feel nothing at all. Juvederm formulas ending in XC include an injectable numbing agent called lidocaine. This anesthetic numbs the treatment area within 15 seconds. Advise us during your initial evaluation if you are allergic to lidocaine. We are happy to administer a Juvederm formula without lidocaine. That said, the needle we use to administer the filler is so fine you won’t need a topical numbing cream.

How Should I Care for My Skin After Treatment?

After your non-invasive lip augmentation, you should avoid putting pressure on your lips and mouth. Additionally, you should refrain from submerging your head during the first 24 hours following your injections. You may take a shower during this time, but we strongly recommend avoiding bathtubs, hot tubs and pools. Furthermore, during the first 72 hours following your injection session, you should avoid retinol-based products, blood thinning drugs and supplements and alcohol consumption. Additionally, during the 96 hours following your non-invasive lip augmentation, minimize your caffeine consumption from all sources, including pain medications and dark chocolate. Finally, avoid strenuous exercise and drink plenty of water during the first four days post-injection.

How Long Will My Lips Remain Augmented?

How long the results of your non-invasive lip augmentation will last depends on your health, age and how well you take care of your skin. For the most durable results, we strongly encourage keeping your lips hydrated and protected from the sun with a lip balm with SPF.
