The process of aging can take much from us, including our youthful radiance. While having the prominent cheekbones of a model may be desirable, having a bony or sunken-in appearance is another thing entirely. If you’re experiencing a loss of facial volume due to the natural process of aging, we have a solution for you. At Beautique Medical Spa in Knoxville, TN, we are pleased to offer Juvederm treatments for restoring facial fullness.
How Soon Does Juvederm Start Working?
Within hours of their first treatment session, most of our clients have noticed an immediate, visible improvement to their overall appearance. Increased facial volume, reduced fine lines and wrinkles, improved skin tightness, and an overall smoother appearance are just some of the results that Juvederm dermal fillers are able to deliver. While the initial results are stunning, they are only a taste of what is to come.
While your skin is instantly revamped by the new moisture introduced by newly injected fillers, these results will fade as the filler settles further into the skin. After the initial results have subsided, your full treatment results will reveal themselves within a few weeks – and sometimes as soon as 14 days – following your appointment.
How Does It Work?
Like most dermal fillers, this treatment is administered using a fine needle. Our highly trained technicians will make several small injections into the targeted treatment area. Once injected beneath the skin, the Juvederm formula will begin to increase the volume in the skin by supporting the skin’s structure. Whether you’re looking to address sagging skin, wrinkles, fine lines, sunken or hollow cheeks, or loss of fullness in the cheeks, jawline, or chin, this treatment can help to address these age-related concerns.
You can also use this treatment as a way to contour different areas of the face, such as the nose. This treatment uses a thicker formula of hyaluronic acid, making it extremely versatile as it is able to settle more densely beneath the skin’s surface.
What Does Hyaluronic Acid Do?
Most dermal fillers on the market are made from hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a known humectant; its moisture-retaining capabilities allow it to balance and add volume to the surface of the skin, thereby minimizing many visible signs of aging.
This moisture-retaining molecule is also able to support other skin-nourishing components in the body, as well. For example, an increase in the presence of hyaluronic acid has been shown to raise the production of collagen in the body. By injecting hyaluronic acid directly into the skin, the body will respond by increasing collagen production in the skin so long as the hyaluronic acid remains present.
What To Expect From Treatment
Prior to your first treatment, you will need to book a consultation appointment at our clinic. At your consultation, we’ll discuss your skin concerns and aesthetic goals, as well as any medical conditions we should be aware of. We’ll want to get to know more about you so we can explore the treatment options available to you and ensure we choose the best option(s) for your specific goals. At your consultation, we’ll also ask questions regarding any medications, supplements, and skin care products you may be using.
At your treatment appointment, you should expect your appointment to last between 20 and 30 minutes, depending on how many areas we will be treating. Prior to administering your injections, we may apply a topical anesthetic to ensure you are comfortable throughout your treatment. If you are sensitive to or concerned about the sensations associated with injections, you may wish to take an over-the-counter pain relief medication. This shouldn’t be necessary, but if you desire to do so, we recommend taking OTC pain medications roughly an hour before your appointment.
How To Prepare for Your Appointment
Prior to your appointment, you won’t need to do much in the way of preparation. At your consultation, we’ll provide you with a list of precautionary measures you’ll want to take for the three to five days leading up to your appointment. This will ensure you’re fully prepared and in the best possible state to receive your dermal filler injections. For example, if you’re taking blood-thinning medications or supplements that may cause the blood to thin, we may request that you temporarily stop taking these medications in order to reduce the possibility of bruising.
If you are prone to bruising or swelling, we may also suggest that you begin taking Arnica supplements. These supplements can help to reduce the possibility of swelling or bruising by helping your body expedite the recovery process.
Recovery and Aftercare
There is little to no downtime required after receiving your dermal fillers, and very minimal aftercare instructions for ensuring you receive the optimal results. We will provide you with aftercare instructions for how to tend to the treated area immediately following your treatment; generally, this will concern how to touch and wash your face, when and how to use a cold compress (if necessary) and other instructions. We will also ask you to avoid any activities that may cause excessive heat or sweating, including avoiding strenuous exercise, saunas, tanning beds, and hot water.
Protecting your skin from sun exposure is also of the utmost importance following your appointment. If you can, avoid direct sun exposure entirely as the UV rays may interfere with the distribution of the filler beneath the skin. If you can’t avoid the sun, be sure to use proper sunscreen and consider wearing a wide-brimmed hat for extra protection.
Be Gentle with Your Skin
Do not touch your face following your appointment. Avoid rubbing, touching, pinching, scrubbing, or massaging the treated skin, and be sure to treat your face gently for the following 4 to 7 days. You need to allow the dermal filler time to settle into your skin and any unnecessary or harsh touching of your face may disrupt this. You may also wish to avoid using skin care with active ingredients (such as retinol) during this time, as the active ingredients may be too harsh and cause skin irritation.
How Often Do You Need Treatment?
In order to maintain your results, you’ll want to book treatment as often as is comfortable. Most clients are satisfied with the results of receiving treatments once every 18 to 24 months, though you’ll want to base your appointment schedule around how long the treatment results remain visible on your skin. Generally speaking, the results of this treatment are expected to last up to two years. This means that receiving treatments once every two years should be sufficient to produce and maintain your desired results.
The expected length of results will vary from person to person depending on a variety of factors. For example, results tend to last longer than two years in younger clients whose aesthetic concerns are on the milder side. On the other hand, for older clients experiencing more severe skin laxity or wrinkles, it’s sometimes necessary to schedule treatments with a bit more frequency.
Will I Need An Allergy Test?
If you have received dermal filler treatments in the past, you won’t need to complete an allergy test. However, if this is your first time receiving Juvederm, an allergy test may be required. Because hyaluronic acid is found in the body, most people do not have allergic reactions to these fillers. It is, however, common practice to ensure all candidates for any cosmetic treatment are not allergic to any of the ingredients included in the treatment (whether active or inactive). During your consultation appointment, we will be able to conduct an allergy test. Allergy testing is convenient and can be completed in as little as 20 minutes.
Who Is a Good Candidate?
Almost anyone who is interested in using dermal fillers to target the signs of aging would make a good candidate for this treatment. In order to be eligible to receive this treatment, you must be 21 years of age or older. Additionally, you must not be allergic to any ingredients listed in the filler, and you must not be currently pregnant or breastfeeding. If you’re not sure if you qualify for this particular treatment, our team of experts will be able to assess your eligibility during your initial consultation.
